When to Implement Progress Monitoring

Screening is conducted quarterly, once during the fall, winter, and spring.

Progress Monitoring is conducted more frequently. The frequency can range from weekly to monthly, depending on the goals and teacher preferences. It is beneficial to set a routine (e.g. every Monday) and encourage the students to participate in monitoring their own progress.

  • It is important to follow instructions faithfully to ensure the best comparison of scores. Changing scoring procedure can be a problem if we need to compare scores. For example, a child allowed 30 additional seconds to complete a probe may appear to have improved from the last testing period – this is a problem! Changing scoring procedures from using the median to the mean – this is a problem!
  • Changes in curriculum, materials, interventions, instructional time, placement or extended absences should be noted on the student’s graph.
